She’s my wife, and it’s time I use her like I’m supposed to. Which means taking her out and showing every motherfucker in the city that the O’Connor’s daughter now belongs to me.

Last night was just a quick tour of the city to show her the turf that’s ours. To show her the boundaries.

Fact was, it’s me who needed to see my boundaries again, because I can’t lose control like I almost did with her. After driving the city for an hour, I took her home and told her to go to the bed.

And I had enough control not to follow.

Tonight we’re going out again, and this time there’s a plan.

“Where are you taking her?” Gabriel walks to the bar along the wall and wraps his fist around the bottle instead of grabbing a glass. When he drops to the chair, I see he’s already been drinking for a while.

“The Rosebud.”

“Spot her an authentic Italian dinner with enough wine to loosen her up for sticking your dick in her.”

“Somethin’ like that.” I pull up the sleeve of my Armani jacket and check my Rolex. Reservations are in half an hour, but if Avery’s late coming downstairs, they’ll hold my table for as long as I want.

“Can’t stand one of those tight bitches who tenses up.” Gabriel pours a hefty slug of alcohol down his throat.

“Has the old man said anything to you about O’Connor today?”

I know there’s something more going down between them. Now that our families are merged, there’s plenty of work to be done in breaking O’Connor to our way of thinking. We’ll use him up and spit him out when we’re finished, but right now, we’ll use him as the liaison between us and the dealers who work for him.

“Not today.” Gabriel sticks a cigarette between his lips. When he lights the tip, the flare of fire sets a glow to his face that shows me he really looks like shit.

“Man, you gotta lay off the booze. You’re gonna ruin your liver.”

He takes a big drag off the cigarette and blows the smoke out slowly. A glimmer hits his eyes. “You actually give a fuck? Is there a single person in this house who does?”

“Fuck no, I don’t care. If you die, it’s more inheritance for me.” I grin, and he knows I’m joking. Family’s family. Blood is blood. He’s my brother and I’ll kill for him.

But the flip side is if he ever lays down a threat against one of our own, then he paints a bullseye on his back.

Just like I would if I refuse to do a job my father hands me. Even if it’s to assassinate the fucking President, I’ll be out there tomorrow with an army to get me through the gates of the White House.

Tonight my job’s to parade Avery around and show every man who holds power in this city that she belongs to me, and in turn, so does O’Connor and everyone associated with him.

“Gimme one of those.” I hold out my hand, and Gabriel flicks the cigarette pack so one slips out of the hole.
